Tips for Maternity Photos:
The best time for your photo shoot is somewhere around 34-36 weeks. Your belly will be nice and full and we don't want to wait until the very last week! Early morning or late afternoon are good times, but we do want Daddy to be there if possible, so plan around his schedule as well. You might want to make a day of it, and get your hair and nails done for the occasion. Not only will you feel like a pampered queen, but you will have that extra bit of confidence that will definitely show in your maternity photographs! When you are so far along, any bit of pampering is welcome anyway (you might want to throw in a maternity-friendly massage while your busy) and once baby arrives and sleep-deprivation makes you feel more like a 5 cent coin than a million bucks, you will be grateful you had that last pick-me-up and the gorgeous pictures to proof it!
Those first few days are so very precious, and every single moment, facial expression and even movement is photo-worthy. I will take newborn pictures of your precious bundle as soon as you would let me but it might be a good idea to wait until the baby is about 6 days old, as he or she will be a little bit more awake and used to being human. Another factor to keep in mind is the onset of infant acne in some infants. Although this is very common and harmless, it may occur after 2 weeks of age. Between 6 and 14 days works best for these. No need to worry about a scratch on his face either, we can fix that in the editing.
If you are expecting and already know that you want to have newborn pictures taken as soon as possible, then feel free to contact me during your last month before baby is due. We can make all the arrangements and I will be stand-by so to speak. Newborn photography always get priority, as the window of opportunity is smaller than with older baby photography. I can travel to the hospital if you want picture of brand-new arrival, or you can phone me when you get to go home with your new bundle of joy and we can schedule a photo shoot within the first 2 weeks. if we have made all the practical arrangements before hand, the new sleep-deprived Mommy has less to worry about!
Every baby is different and Mommy will know best what time of day is best. The ideal time of day is when baby is sleepy, mid-mornings are generally a good time. The lighting is soft and gentle in the morning and most newborn babies have a good sleep somewhere mid-morning. If baby has his or her best sleep during the afternoon, then we schedule for later in the day.
Another factor is feeding times. By no means do I expect your newborn to have 2 hour schedule that runs like clockwork but we can always hope for the best. If you want some pictures of you breastfeeding, we can schedule photo shoot for about half an hour before baby's feeding time. We will hit the triple whammy where we can take gorgeous intimate special picture of tender moment between Mom and child, baby will be winded, which gives opportunity for family photographs (especially if Dad can join in) and the Junior will be nice and sleepy and most willing to cuddle up and look cute for the photographer.
If will ask Mommy to dress baby down to nappy only and wrap nice and comfy about an hour before I arrive, so baby can get comfortable, adjust body temperature and get rid of any clothing marks on skin. This will make for much loss drama should baby want to have a bit of a cry while being undressed. During colder month it might be helpful if a heater can be turned on in the room about an hour before arrival as well. I will bring along my own heater, but it will go along way towards a happy baby if the environment is calm and comfortable for as long as possible.
Newborn tips:
The time of day is not critically important with the toddler photographs. A good idea might be to plan the photo shoot some where around bath time. If bath time is the morning, we do the photo shoot right after morning bath, and if bath time is in the evening, we can plan to bath your toddler a bit earlier while daylight is still bright enough for good photographs. The only reason for the is so that your toddler is still clean for the photographer, as we all know they cant stay clean for very long, and we don't want to be upsetting them with dressing and undressing constantly.
Also, try to wake your toddler up from his or her nap about 20 minutes before photographer arrives, so the puffiness around the eyes can be gone along with any grogginess.
From 6 to 12 months, some very exciting milestones are reached and can be captured at every stage. The sitting, the first tooth, the crawling, the boisterous laughing and general clown antics are inexhaustible as far as baby pictures go. Again it will take participation from Mommy and Daddy to entertain baby and act as personal stylists, straightening a dress or smoothing a stray hair for the perfect picture.
Ages 12 to 24 months are the months of great fun and games for the photographer. The mobility has set in in full force and sitting still for a photo seems very boring when there is a big world to conquer. These little jitterbugs will unfortunately not listen to commands like smile serenely, lean forward a tag or tilt your head slightly to the left, but the pictures captured will be oh so natural and will speak a thousand words!
After the age of two years, we can incorporate a lot of posing, playing and costumes for fun. The sky is the limit here and these posers will most probably enjoy every last bit of the attention once they get used to the camera. I try and spend some time, even just 5 minutes, to play and interact with the models, and they warm up to the photographer very soon.
